Free Methods
Social Media, if you are only going to use a few, I have listed in order of preference.
- Facebook - Create a personal page, then a Fan Page for the business. Decide now what you are going to use your personal page for! If it is to talk about your kids and family, do not friend anyone you do not know. If you are well known and want to attract cyber friends, keep the conversation semi-professional. Be sure the facebook page with a vanity URL. Facebook is always changing how people view things. A little reserch in this area is advised.
- Twitter - Link to your fan page and all Page posts will go to your Twitter account.
- Groups and Forums - This can be time consuming but you get to talk right with the consumer. Just follow the groups rules and you shouldn't get banned. Don't forget to use links in your signature everytime!
- YouTube - If appropriate create some videos about what you do and upload to YouTube and embed either links or videos on your website. You should limit videos to one per page and use the smallest screen available, most users know how to view full screen if desired.
- MySpace - Unless you are a hip young musician your time will be better spent on the above medias.
- Digg, Delicious, and the list goes on. See what fits for you. If you don't think you are going to keep up with content, it is probably best left alone. However, if you write articles - you should read the blog information following.
Press releases - Submit to industry specific print papers and magazines. I don’t recommend paying for print ads for a small business. However, by sending press releases you can get free advertising. Make sure news in relevant to the publication you are sending it to.
Blog - If you are still reading you have just been rewarded. A blog is by far the best thing you can do to help your website grow. BUT - you need to host on your website for best results. Keep the content fresh and the bots and spiders will love you! Don't forget to submit to Digg, Delicious and other reader sites.
